  • The healthcare industry is experiencing fundamental transformation moving from a volume-based business to a value-based business.

To meet the changing environment healthcare organizations need to reduce costs, improve coordination and outcomes, provide more with less and become more patient centric

    Health Care Data

Current health care IT initiatives seek to build a national health IT infrastructure that will provide a more comprehensive, patient-focused view of health related information.

Health information exchange (HIE) requires that electronic health record (EHR) systems be able to electronically communicate with a variety of health related entities. This will assure that patient data may be accessed, with proper authorization, without technical impediments. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) is responsible for setting the standards for national HIE. The federal government has provided grants to the states to build state HIEs.

According to the requirements for meaningful use, patient data must be submitted to public health agencies and be capable of being exchanged with other care providers and patient-authorized entities. HIPPA standards have been revised to accommodate the HIEs. These revisions include administrative safeguards, physical safeguards and technical safeguards.

Analytics competency can help these healthcare organizations harness “big data” to create actionable insights, set their future vision, improve outcomes and reduce time to value. Here is a roadmap to help get "big data" under control.

    Gerontology Reaseach and Majors

    Gerontology

Gerontology (from the Greek γέρων, geron, "old man" and -λογία, -logy, "study of"; coined by Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov in 1903) is the study of the social, psychological and biological aspects of aging. It is distinguished from geriatrics, which is the branch of medicine that studies the diseases of older adults. Gerontologists includes researchers and practitioners in the fields of biology, medicine, nursing, dentistry, social work, physical and occupational therapy, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics, political science, architecture, pharmacy, public health, housing and anthropology [1].

    Gerontology encompasses the following:

  • studying physical, mental, and social changes in people as they age
  • investigating the aging(ageing), process itself (biogerontology)
  • investigating the interface of normal ageing and age-related disease (geroscience)
  • investigating the effects of an ageing population on society
  • applying this knowledge to policies and programs, including the macroscopic (for example government planning) and microscopic (for example running a nursing home) perspectives.

    Roybal Centers

The Roybal Centers for Translational Research in the Behavioral and Social Sciences of Aging are supported by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) with cofunding from the National Institutes of Health Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Social Security Administration, and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, Department of Education. The Roybal Centers, 13 in 2009, seek to disseminate and increase the use of research results that benefit older Americans. Below is a list of current research.

    Schools with Gerontology Majors

Gerontology majors study the human aging process and the biological, behavioral, and social changes associated with aging. One topic of study is the provision of services to older people and their families. For example:

Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology, Virtual Library on Aging

The Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University brings together science and service to advance the cause of aging research. Its multidisciplinary faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and pre-doctoral trainees focus on the social and behavioral aspects of lifespan health and cognitive development. Dedicated to promoting successful aging, the Institute of Gerontology is where research and outreach combine to make life better in Detroit and beyond.
