One of the best things about retirement? Your new flexible schedule. No longer are you beholden to the nine-to-five grind. Take it from a retiree—you have a lot more free time on your hands! 1. Eat out at lunch instead of dinner.

Did you know that you can eat out at lunch and enjoy the same dishes you pay higher prices for at dinnertime? My wife and I do this often. Not only do we save money, but we actually enjoy meal even more, since it’s less crowded when we go. Now that I’m retired, I can actually go out to eat at lunchtime! Retirement truly is a blessing. Of course, you could always catch the early bird specials! They’re made for retirees, just like ourselves.

2. Join a senior center.

Did you know that older adults who are part of seniors centers are actually happier and healthier compared to their peers? And it’s no wonder! They’re wonderful places to meet friends and enjoy a wide range of activities. From arts programs to free lunches to volunteer opportunities, seniors will have their pick of fun, and often FREE, activities! This is a great way for older adults to stay connected to their community and socially active after retirement.

Since retiring, my wife and I prefer to take trips during the off-season. Right after school start is an ideal time. In my experience, the off-season has fewer crowds and better rates! And remember—retirement is when you can be the most spontaneous. Don’t be afraid to take quick trips during the mid-week rather than the weekend. In my experience, this is an easy way to save money.

4. Visit national and state parks.

Did you know that you can buy an Annual Senior Pass for just $20? This will provide seniors admittance to over 2,000 parks across the US. Wow! Talk about a great deal! Note: You must be aged 62 or older to take advantage of the senior discounts. If you’ve been looking something fun and educational to do during retirement, this is your sign. Go and see everything this big, beautiful country of ours has to offer.
