5 Places Retired Boomers Choose to Live

Every day, over 10,000 Boomers turn 65. I, myself, reached this milestone age last year. As so many Boomers reach retirement age, only one question comes to mind: Where will they live? I’ve spent a lot of time combing the internet for information. Here are 5 answers I found!

1. Moving to an active adult community in another state.

Many retired Boomers choose to move to an active adult community in another state. Florida is the most popular destination (according to Forbes). Of course, the same study shows that Boomers also choose to move to Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, too!

2. Moving to an active adult community in their your state.

Many Boomers are loyal to their state of residence! However, others also choose to downsize. For some Boomers, this means selling their home and moving into an active adult community. With over 2,000 active adult communities in the US alone, it shouldn’t be hard for any Boomer to find the perfect fit—whether it’s within their current zip code or outside of it.

3. Purchasing a new home in another state.

Active adult community living isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay! Boomers have a myriad of options at their fingertips. While Florida and the Carolinas are a popular option I mentioned above, another state Boomers might consider is Delaware. Not only is it a tax-friendly state, but it’s conveniently close to Philadelphia, Baltimore, and other tourist-friendly cities!

4. Moving to a different home within your state.

If you love your state, there’s really no reason to move! However, your current home may be too big or too small to fit your needs. Upsizing and downsizing are two housing options for Boomers to consider!

5. Staying in their current home.

Dorothy Gale from The Wizard of Oz said it best: “There’s no place like home.” For many people, their house is more than mere shelter. It’s a treasure trove of memories. Of Christmas mornings with their children. Nights stargazing on the back deck. Barbecues with friends and family. As long as you feel safe and happy in your current place, there’s no absolutely no law that says you have to leave. After all, retirement is when it’s time to start focusing on you.
