Meeting Loved Ones Where They Are, with Faith Marshall
Faith Marshall of Awakenings Hypnosis & Coaching is a published author and expert on Alzheimer’s and dementia with a new approach. In this segment, Faith discusses the fear that we’ve been reaching out to our loved ones in senior centers via Zoom, or phone calls or with a window separating them, and being afraid that they won’t remember us when we’re finally able to reconnect with them in person. I would just want to run in and give them a big hug, but it may be better first to gauge how they’ll respond to that, taking a baby-steps journey toward becoming reacquainted, meeting them where they psychologically.

The following is a podcast from a qualified senior care provider part on the answers for elders radio show. And welcome everyone to answers for elders radio on this Saturday May Day. And you know, before we start the show, today is today’s for those of you that may not remember, this is the time where you leave a little bit of flowers outside somebody’s door and we have a booth seniors in our neighborhood and wouldn’t it be great if we all found one senior and did that today? And speaking of seniors and speaking of someone who really cares about them, we have a guessed she’s been on one other time, a long time ago, and I’m so glad she’s agreed to come back and share with us because faith Marshall is here and she is an Alzheimer’s dementia expert and a published author and she has a very interesting new approach to dealing with Alzheimer’s dementia and I just want to talk to her and spend the hour with her and talking a little bit about, you know, where we’re going with this world and what’s happening and all that good stuff. So faith, welcome back to answers for elders. Radio. Hi, South An, this is wonderful. It’s been a hot minute since I was on last and I know it’s actually in your studio. Yes, you were. Now we do things through zoom because we want to make sure that everybody is say and and you know, and certainly we’re doing that and we’re coming out the other side of everybody getting vaccinated, and especially our seniors, and now anybody over the age of eighteen it you know, can get a vaccine, and so that’s really an exciting part of where we see things moving forward. So I’m so thrilled. Anyway, I would love to talk to you a little bit faith about you know, first of all, before we get into what you do, which I think is very unique and I’m excited to share with our listeners, tell us a little bit about you and your background and and what you do and your book. Thank you. My mom had the mansion Alzheimer’s. That lasted about ten years and when you navigate that journey you go through a lot of personal growth and I started journaling that experience and then, after mom passed away, with the encouragement of some friends, I decided to turn it into a book and I really just wanted to help people. So it just kind of continued down the road into next phases of helping people and that’s that’s where I am today. Yeah, and serving that community book. I miss you, mom. A daughter’s journey into demential land. HMM. And Your Che people get it. It’s on Amazon, HMM, and through my website as well. You can go to the website faith marshallcom and there’s a link to get you to Amazon or you can just go shopping on Amazon. Huh. Mom’s journey was unique in that she was a dancer here locally with the gatabouts and performed at Victorian Country Christmas. So the cover of the book has a beautiful picture of my mom with her seventy five year old legs and fishnet stockings and she was so proud of those legs that it just had to be the cover of the book. I love that. You know, to have those kind of memories of when our parents were vibrant and the things that they love to do and and certainly keeps it’s a comfort to our hearts. Yes, and totally so. You know, through your career faith you’ve discovered kind of a new bit of ability to reach seniors, and that is through you know, we’re here right now. Obviously everybody is trying to find new ways of reaching their loved ones and different things like that, and we’re here to talk about kind of a method that you’ve been discovering and working with, and that is hypnosis. So tell me a little bit about what does that mean? Now is we’re navigating and coming out of this year of Covid and how does that all fit into? Well, it it. I am in the process of learning how to help a actual dementia patient by the use of hypnosis. Amazing by the end of this year, two thousand and twenty one, I’ll be certified as a dementia consultant and be able to help them with navigating their their mood. And it’s still amazing to me, although I am a certified hypnotist, when you’re hypnotizing someone that’s cooperating with you, it’s a it. It appears to be easier. So this is something I’m really excited about learning. There are several hypnotists that do work with patients. My hot topic is helping them through Sundowners. If you can anchor someone with a fragrance like a fragrance of lavender so that the family can bring that fragrance out and then help the patient to remember this sub suggestions that they were given during a hypnosis session. So I’m really excited about that. Uh Huh. I’m not the expert in hypnosis for that purpose yet, but I will be by the end of two thousand and twenty one. So you’re obviously running into families. I know we’ve been. I’ve been talking to so many people right now that have, you know, had long absences from their loved ones and maybe they do have to mention whatever it’s like. You know, there’s obviously times where now families are starting to see new things or new developments with their loved ones, especially because they’ve been apart. What are some of kind of the the things that you’re finding? Everyone is just like all of us. We have dealt with this last year differently. M Your situation has been different. You may have been home, you may have been able to work, you may have had to work very and your loved one is either with you in home, at your home or their home, or they’re in a facility that you haven’t been able to visit them. So it’s it’s hard. There’s so much unknown. We’re excited about getting out, we’re excited about connecting with people, but I always had that fear is mom going to remember me? And I can just imagine that same fear that people are feeling now, even though you’ve been facetiming or telephoning or even standing outside of the window at their their facility, where they’ve been cared for and very safe and secure, but you don’t know how they’re going to react to you when you when you see them physically. You’re and I would just want to run in and give mom a big hug through but and that would be my plan a, but my plan be should be to kind of get a feel for how she’s going to respond to seeing me, if there’s going to be fair in her eyes or it’s it’s just baby step journey on that that reacquaintance. What you’re saying is is like you know, you meet people where they are and I think a lot of times, whether mom or dad have been at home or if they’ve been in a community, you know their experience make may very well likely is different than yours. Yes, through this last year a lot of them haven’t left their homes and other than, you know, for a rare situation, to get a vaccine or something like that in a year. Yeah, and I know from me, and I’ve talked about this another segments. You know, just since I’ve been the clear and fully vaccinated, now I’ve been able to go into the grocery store for the first time in like a year. You know, before I had my groceries, you know, delivered to me or I go pick them up in the parking lot, you know, one of those situations. And so even walking in the grocery store it’s like there’s this overwhelming bit of of, you know, stimulus that you’re nice too, and I can only imagine with a senior that has dementia or Alzheimer’s. How would that affect them in that way? It’s really a mystery because it depends on what stage they’re at and whether they’ve they’ve energetically picked up on all of this fear that, you know, is having to be stay in their room, they can’t go in the cafeteria, they can’t socialize with the others in the in the nursing home. So I think all of us are kind of stepping through a sense of fear that has been programmed in us and and having that not knowing whether this is safe. Huh. So that’s why I say that you kind of have to meet them where they are, like you said, and and get a gage for where they’re at. Some of us, when you get into a family situation, it’s like it all comes back to us and we start to, you know, take our masks off with the family and feel comfortable again. But you don’t know how they’re going to react, because we’ve all been programmed for safety and whether they’re retaining that or not is a little bit of a mystery. So it’s just baby steps really. Absolutely now, obviously, for for you know, hypnosis. When you use the term hypnosis, there’s a lot of ways in which were subconsciously already be being hypnotized as human beings. Correct. So, yes, what you’re basically doing is reformatting the pattern within the the brain. Yes, yeah, yeah, so a lot of things, if a senior has been pooped up or there’s a lot of innate years, it’s like bringing back things from the past, especially with the dementia. That’s can be very helpful. Yeah, yeah, I love to use music as a grounding. It’s like the brain has a memory of music that has nothing to do with dementia or where you’re at. A song can bring them back and bring them joy and that’s a just a wonderful, beautiful way to remember the remember the Fun Times right and bring that up for them well, and I I certainly am am excited to explore this topic with you for this hour as we’re as we’re come conversing here. And in the meantime, faith, I know for you what you know. I tell us a little bit, just we have about one minute. Tell us a little bit about awakening, Hypnosis and coaches and coaching.
