Walt Whitman: An American
Instructor: Frank Serafino
The Poetry Foundation calls Walt Whitman “the first writer of a truly American poetry.” Whitman quit school at age 11, became a journalist, and then self-published Leaves of Grass (1855), his innovative and influential collection of poems. Whitman’s use of free verse, affirmation of individual freedom, and broad-mindedness of sexuality, created both controversy and admiration. Join us as we examine this great American literary figure and explore the intricacies and influence of his work.

China, the U.S. and the South China Sea
Instructor: Pat deRosset
The rise of China has put tension on the international system. The U.S. has experienced direct confrontation with China in the South China Sea in recent years. How this problem is or is not solved may have a direct bearing on our ability to deal with a rising power like China. Until disputes are behind us, the South China Sea promises to remain a fulcrum upon which the geopolitics of trade and the global economy pivot. Let’s discuss how the problem evolved and how it’s likely to be handled.
