Applications for ESL and High School Equivalency classes for the fall term will open on Monday, July 8, 2019.?
The Adult Learning Center at the College of Staten offers High School Equivalency, Pre-High School Equivalency and English as a Second Language classes for individuals with the goal of passing the New York State High School Equivalency (TASC) Test or becoming proficient in the English language in order to enter job training, employment and/or post-secondary education.
Classes are held during 10-week terms during fall, winter and spring at the College of Staten Island Merrill Avenue and St. George locations. Morning classes meet from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. and evening classes meet from 6:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. Refer to the registration information section below for instructions on how to register for classes.
High School Equivalency (HSE) Classes
High School Equivalency “HSE” classes prepare students for the reading, writing, science, social studies, and math TASC (Test Assessing Secondary Completion) Test. Students who pass the TASC Test earn a High School Equivalency diploma through the University of the State of New York State Education Department. HSE students are required to participate in weekly College and Career Success Seminars.
Pre-High School Equivalency (PRE-HSE) Classes
Pre-High School Equivalency “PRE HSE” classes provide instruction which improve reading, writing and math skills. High school equivalency test subject areas (reading, social studies, science, writing, and math) are incorporated into PRE-HSE curriculum.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes
English as a Second Language “ESL” classes provide English language instruction to students seeking to improve their ability to speak, understand, read, and write in the English language and have the goal to enter employment and/or college. Upper level ESL students are required to participate in weekly College and Career Success Seminars.
TASC Test Information
Effective January 2014, New York State no longer offers the GED Test. The high school equivalency test in New York is now the TASC-(Test Assessing Secondary Completion). Refer to NYSED.gov/TASC for future TASC Test dates.
Registration Information Spring 2019
Applications are accepted online ONLY. Click on the link below to apply for the Spring 2019 Term. The application opens March 4, 2019.
It may take up to four weeks after your online application has been submitted for notification of registration dates and times.
Bring a pen or pencil at the time of registration. Please be on time as latecomers will not be able to register. Registration does not guarantee placement.
Seats are limited and once seats are filled applications will not be accepted for the term. THERE IS NO LONGER A WAIT LIST.
If your application is not accepted for Spring 2019 classes you may apply for the Fall 2019 Term beginning July 1, 2019.
