Continuing Education
Continuing Education promotes the lifelong learning process by offering a wide range of programs and services. These programs and services are designed to meet the needs and interests of adults, regardless of their educational background. Some courses and services are offered on a continuing basis while others begin as a result of specific requests by individuals or professional or civic groups.

Courses can be delivered on or off campus, day or night, whenever or wherever there is an interest expressed by a sufficient number of people. Courses and services are usually designed to assist in the following areas:

To prepare for entry into an occupation
To upgrade or retrain employed individuals
To provide cultural awareness
To provide self-improvement opportunities
The broad areas of Continuing Education are College and Career Readiness, Career Readiness Certification, Business & Industry Services, Health Occupations, Hispanic/Latino Initiatives, Human Resources Development, Public Safety Programs, the Small Business Center, Special Programs, and the NCWorks Career Center.

Requests and suggestions for new courses are always welcome!

Continuing Education Unit
The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) was designed to recognize and record individual and institutional participation in non-traditional studies and special activities. The CEU meets the need in adult and continuing education for uniformity in the planning of educational experiences for technical and professional people who seek to improve their competency and skill levels through staff development-type training.

Edgecombe Community College has adopted the CEU as a system for record-keeping and quality control in programs of educational activities in continuing education. The functions of organization, instruction, and record-keeping are performed according to CEU standards in programs of continuing education.

CEUs are awarded for teacher certificate renewal courses in terms of "units of credit." Other certificate renewal CEUs are in Cosmetology, Real Estate, and Real Estate Appraisal. There is an application to the governing agency for CEU course approval. All other courses awarding CEUs will be approved on a course by course basis using the criteria listed below. Adult Basic Education, GED, and most general adult education and self-supporting courses will not be measured in institutional CEUs.

Edgecombe Community College's policy in regard to CEU courses requires all the following criteria be met before CEUs will be awarded.

The activity will be sponsored, CEUs determined, and faculty personnel approved by the Continuing Education Division at Edgecombe Community College.
The amount of CEUs for any course shall be determined prior to the course offering announcement.
In the preplanning sessions, there is active involvement by the target population, appropriate instructional personnel, and representation by Edgecombe Community College.
There is an articulated activity description, an identification of the target population rationale, education need(s), objectives, sequential outline of the program, and a vehicle for evaluation.
Each participant duly registers for CEUs by completing an appropriate registration form.
A permanent record must be maintained for each student.
The local administrative responsibility resides in the Department of Instruction.
