10 Simple Ways to Show Your Love For Your Grandkids This Valentine’s Day

There’s a lot of hoopla on Valentine’s Day about romantic love. But love comes in many shapes and forms! All your loved ones deserve to know how cherished they are on Valentine’s Day, your grandkids included. Sure, you can give them a heart-shaped card and call it a day. But you go all out for your significant other on Valentine’s Day. Why not do the same for your grandchild? Here are a few ways you can make your grandbabies’ Valentine’s Day a little extra special.
1. Give them a handwritten letter or card.
Did you know that approximately 114 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged every year? You might believe that if you walk into any store in February. After all, stores have hundreds, if not thousands, of pre-made cards to choose from. But you really can’t beat a handmade card. So, this Valentine’s Day, make one for your grandkids! You don’t have to be an artist to make a card they’ll love and cherish forever. You can even get a simple piece of notebook paper and simply write down everything you love about them. (Author’s note: I’ve kept every single card that my grandparents have given me for Valentine’s Day, dating back to when I was a child. Cards truly do mean a lot to grandkids!)
2. Bake together.
Baking is a fun activity for kids of all ages. Plus, nothing says Valentine’s Day quite like a heart-shaped cookie! So invite your grandkids over to have a little baking session. Make some sugar cookies or maybe a red velvet cake. Not only will you be giving them a Valentine’s Day they’ll be sure to remember, but you can also teach them some skills that will definitely come in handy later in life!
3. Do a little crafting session.
Are you crafty? No, not that kind of crafty. The kind that involves glue and glitter! Even if you can’t tell a glue stick from a yard stick, you can still have fun crafting with your grandkids! You can make cards, decorations, or whatever your imagination can think up! Sarah over at The Farm Wife Crafts has easy-to-follow instructions on Coffee Filter Heart Suncatchers. 4. Have a Movie Night
Movies are always a good idea! This Valentine’s Day, have a little movie night with your grandkids. Don’t forget the snacks! Some chocolate, pop corn, candy hearts, and suckers are all appropriate for the season. If you need some movie ideas, then I definitely recommend The Parent Trap (I’m partial to the 1961 version starring Hayley Mills) or A Charlie Brown Valentine.
5. Create a love jar.
If you have old, unused Mason jars lying around, don’t just let them sit in the drawer and collect dust! Instead, turn them into a love jar for your grandkids! Fill them with little notes or cute drawings. Be sure to tell them how much you love them so they pull one out whenever they need a pick-me-up. A jar full of mementos from you will definitely last longer than a teddy bear or candy.
6. Create a photo album or scrapbook.
Photo albums and scrapbooks are something of a lost art, replaced by social media and online photo galleries. That doesn’t mean that you can’t make one with your grandkids this Valentine’s Day! You can gather pictures from the day they were born (and other big milestones captured) and put them in a scrapbook or photo album for safekeeping. Make sure to share the memories behind each picture!
7. Send a surprise package.
Everyone loves surprises, especially kids! So, this Valentine’s Day, mail your grandkids a package. You can always buy them a few trinkets through Amazon and have it sent to their address. (An especially convenient option for older adults with mobility issues!) If you’re afraid it won’t get in time and live close to your grandkids, then give it to them in person. No matter how the package gets there, I promise it will make your grandchildren’s day extra, extra special!
8. Have a storytime!
Do you like telling stories? And do your grandkids like hearing them? Then sit down with them and have a Valentine’s Day storytime! You can tell them the story of how you met your spouse. Or maybe you can tell them the story of how your parents met. Even if you didn’t have a meet-cute, I think your grandchild will still love hearing about how you and your significant other met. You can also make up a story or read one from a book. Bonus points if you give different voices to all the characters.
9. Pass out love coupons.
What’s a love coupon? I’m so glad you asked! Love coupons are coupons that a loved one can redeem for something special. You can design them yourself on Canva or buy some on Etsy. After you’ve printed out all your love coupons, give them to your grandkids, who can then redeem them for hugs, a free meal, a special day with you, or whatever else you decide!
10. Make a special breakfast.
They say that a man’s heart is through his stomach, but I feel that applies to more than men! Everyone appreciates a good, home-cooked meal, and I’m sure your grandkids are no exception! So, this Valentine’s Day, make them a special breakfast. You could make some heart-shaped pancakes and waffles. Or you could drop off (or DoorDash) some breakfast at their house. If they don’t have enough time before school to sit down for breakfast, take them out for dinner afterward instead. Or invite them over for their favorite meal at your house!
