1. Have a New Year’s Eve party!

New Year’s Eve parties are a classic for a reason! So, if you’re looking for a fun way to ring in 2025, why not plan one? You can find reasonably priced decorations at your local Wal-Mart, Dollar General, or Dollar Tree. If you can’t plan a New Year’s Eve party on your own, don’t be afraid to enlist the help of friends and loved ones! You can even hire special event clean-up services.

2. Host a virtual celebration.

Some older adults may be housebound, while others are homebodies who dislike leaving their favorite couch spot (been there). Does that mean that the people who fall into these categories can’t celebrate New Year’s Eve? Of course not! Hold a virtual New Year’s Eve celebration through video calls if you can’t be with your friends and family in person. You can play online games and share your resolutions. Or you can just chat and enjoy each other’s company!

3. New Year’s Eve movie marathon!

So, you don’t feel like getting dressed and going out or FaceTiming your friends when the ball drops. Don’t worry, you aren’t out of luck! Ring in the new year with a movie night. Sleepless in Seattle, starring our favorite romcom duo Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, has a touching scene that takes place on New Year’s Eve. Or you can watch When Harry Met Sally (another Meg Ryan classic with an iconic New Year’s Eve scene). Meanwhile, the classic short Happy New Year, Charlie Brown! might get you in a celebratory mood.

4. Do a puzzle and board game party.

If your idea of fun involves puzzles and tea, then we have a great idea for you: a New Year’s Eve game night. You can do it alone or with your family and friends. Looking for game suggestions? Here are a few you might just enjoy:

5. Gentle exercise party!

Why wait for the New Year to start getting in shape? You could always host a gentle exercise party, with chair yoga, dancing, simple stretches, or another kind of low-impact workout. When we say “party”, we don’t necessarily mean you have to invite a bunch of people over. You could workout as a party of one or twelve…whatever will motivate you more! Check out Senior Fitness with Meredith’s YouTube Channel for some inspiration!

6. Music and Dance Party

If chair yoga isn’t your thing, then have a little dance party instead! Create a playlist of your favorite songs on Spotify or YouTube Music and get moving! Whether you pull a Billy Idol and dance with yourself or end up starting a conga line in your living room, we’re sure you’ll ring in the new year with a smile!

7. Create a vision board.

A vision board is exactly what it sounds like: a board where you write all your goals and resolutions for the upcoming year. Think of at least three or four goals you’d like to accomplish in 2025. It could be something as simple as learning how to paint an apple or drive a stick shift. You could also write about your health goals! For example, do you need to lose weight? Gain muscle? Stop drinking so much pop and start drinking more water? And what about your relationships? Do you want to end the new year with more friends? Or maybe make up with a friend you lost? Do you want to stop talking about that big trip to Hawaii you’ve always dreamed about and actually go? After you’re done, put your vision board somewhere you can see it every day. That way, you can hold yourself accountable!

8. Make a time capsule.

Have you ever wanted to bury a time capsule? (We have.) Do you think it would be fun to dig it up in a few years? (We do!) Then why not make one and do exactly that? (We WILL!) Get a jar or a small metal box and fill it with whatever you’d like: notes, photos, small mementos…something that is meaningful but not so much that you can’t live without it for a few years! Once you’ve finished filling your time capsule, bury it somewhere in your backyard. Don’t forget to make a little note so you remember where you put it!

9. Have a cooking or baking party.

Maybe your goal in the new year isn’t to eat less. Maybe it’s to eat more. (No judgment from us!) If that’s the case, host a cooking or baking party! Ask everyone on your guest list to bring a dish or dessert. Then sit down together and enjoy the feast. You can even combine this activity with some others on our list. Craft time and movie marathons do go hand in hand, after all!
