Theme parks are for everyone. They can be a blast for grandparents to visit with their grandchildren. My mom loves making memories with her grandkids while riding rides and enjoying the shows, but some parks are expensive and exhausting. The good news? Many theme parks offer fun for all ages without emptying your wallet. If you’re looking for an affordable way to make memories with your grandchildren, here are five fantastic theme parks to consider. As a bonus, I’m sharing some money-saving tips and ways to make everyone’s day less stressful and more fun.

1. Knoebels Amusement Resort (Elysburg, PA)

If you love the idea of an old-fashioned amusement park with plenty of charm, Knoebels is a must-visit spot. Nestled in the Pennsylvania countryside, this theme park has been family-owned for generations. Step beyond the gates, and you instantly feel that welcoming, nostalgic vibe. Perhaps the best part is that admission is free!

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Free admission and free parking mean you only pay for the rides you want to go on.
  • More than 60 rides and attractions mean there’s something for everyone, and all ages can have a great time.
  • Kiddie rides and gentle coasters make it fun for your youngest grandchildren, while classic wooden roller coasters like the Phoenix offer a thrill for the older grandkids and adults.
  • Cool off in the summer in the refreshing spring water pool with waterslides and diving boards.
  • Plenty of shaded picnic areas are available. The park allows you to bring your own food, saving you a decent chunk of change on snacks and meals.

2. Silver Dollar City (Branson, MO)

This 1880s-themed park in the heart of the Ozarks isn’t just about rides—it’s an immersive experience. Grandparents will appreciate warm evenings enjoying live music, strolling through shops to find artisans crafting handmade goods, and enjoying slow, scenic train rides. Your grandchildren will have a blast riding Silver Dollar City’s fast and thrilling coasters and spending time in the refreshing splash yard or riding Mystic River Falls. There are rides for the little ones too, including Wings of Wonder and Up the Ladder.

  • Two days for the price of one summer tickets, discounted senior tickets, and group rates make visiting here on the wallet.

  • The park’s slow-paced, scenic setting is a pleasant break from the usual high-energy amusement park atmosphere.
  • There are plenty of shaded areas where you can take a break and enjoy a meal or a snack.
  • The Silver Dollar campground has space for your RV, or you can rent a log cabin and stay on-site.

3. Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari (Santa Claus, IN)

What’s better than a day at the theme park? Enjoying your day while also partaking in free soft drinks, sunscreen, and parking. Holiday World has been delighting families for years with an affordable pricing structure.  The park is clean, family-friendly, and has a fantastic water park for cooling off on hot summer days. Through the gates, you’ll find plenty of low-key kiddie rides, high-flying coasters, thrilling water rides, splash grounds, shows, and entertainment to assure everyone has a great time during your visit.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • Free drinks (including water, coffee, and soft drinks) save you money and keep everyone hydrated on hot summer days.

  • The Christmas-themed section, drones, and fireworks add a little extra holiday magic for young kids.
  • There are several affordable lodging options close by, including Santa’s Lodge, offering you options for enjoying multi-day visits without breaking the budget.

4. Legoland Florida (Winter Haven, FL)

If your grandkids love Legos, this Central Florida park is a no-brainer. Many people enjoy it as an affordable addition to their Walt Disney World vacation. The theme park is designed for kids ages 2–12, but with more than 55 rides and attractions, it’s enjoyable for guests of all ages. Legoland is a fun, interactive place where you won’t feel overwhelmed by an overabundance of massive thrill rides or long lines. It’s also the ideal spot for picking up your grandchildren’s favorite Lego sets to take home and enjoy after the trip.

Why You’ll Love It:

  • The theme park contains three parks, a water park, the original Legoland, and a Pepa Pig theme park. This makes it easy to arrange an affordable multi-day vacation without breaking the bank.
  • Rides and attractions are tailored to younger kids, so there’s less time spent waiting and more time spent having fun.
  • Plenty of play areas are spread throughout the park where kids can build and create while you rest in the shade.
  • Discounts are available for seniors and Florida residents, making it a more affordable theme park option.

5. Dollywood (Pigeon Forge, TN)

Dolly Parton’s namesake park blends Southern hospitality, delicious food, and live entertainment in the scenic Smoky Mountains. There are also plenty of fun rides at Dollywood for all ages. It’s been ranked the number one theme park in the United States by TripAdvisor. If your grandchildren have developmental or physical disabilities, this theme park won’t leave them out. It’s highly accessible and offers fun entertainment and relaxing areas that everyone can enjoy.

Money-Saving Tips for Theme Park Tickets

Once you’ve decided on the theme park you want to visit with your grandkids, it’s time to start thinking about the budget. This is the part that everyone dreads, as even a day trip can quickly drain your pocketbook if you’re not careful. Along with the discounts and savings ideas these theme parks offer, there are a few other ways you can stretch your dollars a little further. Here are some of my favorite tricks I’ve learned over the years:

  • Buy tickets online in advance. Many parks offer discounts for pre-purchased tickets versus paying at the gate. Buying in advance also ensures you can get into the park on the day you choose, as some parks limit capacity, especially during busy seasons.
  • Check for senior, military, and other discounts. Some parks offer lower-priced tickets for grandparents, veterans, or AARP and AAA members. Always ask before you make a purchase.
  • Look for multi-day passes or group bundles. If you’re visiting with multiple families or all of your grandkids, bundled tickets can offer significant savings. Purchasing multi-day or season passes also sometimes makes sense financially if you’re planning to make the trip a more than one-day adventure.
  • Pack some snacks and water. Many parks allow outside food, and almost all passes will permit you to bring a water bottle. Packing even a few sandwiches or granola bars can help cut food costs. Filling up your bottle at filling stations is free and healthier than buying sodas all day.
  • Visit during the off-season. Prices for some parks are lower in the fall and spring when crowds are smaller.
  • Plan an afternoon or evening visit. A few parks offer discounted tickets if you start your day later in the afternoon.

Making Your Day in a Theme Park More Enjoyable

Once you’ve purchased your tickets, it’s time to plan your day in the theme park. This part is fun but can also be exhausting, especially for grandparents and young toddlers! Here are some simple ways to keep everyone happy and comfortable throughout a long day in the park:

  • Start early, leave early. Arrive when the park opens to beat the crowds and enjoy shorter lines, then plan to leave before the late afternoon heat and fatigue set in.
  • Stay on-site. If it’s an option, stay at an on-site hotel. This makes it easier to return to your hotel room midday for a break and then hit the park again in the evening for more fun.
  • Take breaks in the shade. Most parks have benches, shaded seating areas, or even indoor attractions where you can relax. Plan your day to allow for some time in the seating areas or indoor entertainment spaces so that the sun doesn’t do you in.
  • Stay hydrated. Bring refillable water bottles or take advantage of parks that offer free water. Plan to stop at least every couple of hours to fill up your bottle, refresh, and rehydrate.
  • Rent a mobility scooter or stroller. If you or your grandkids get tired easily, renting a scooter or stroller can be a game-changer. This will help you move through the park faster without exhausting yourselves.
  • Choose rides strategically. Look for slow-moving attractions, shows, or boat rides. Slot those in between faster faced rides, they’ll provide you with opportunities to sit and enjoy the experience.

Final Thoughts

With a little planning and by choosing the right park, you can have a fun-filled day well within budget and without breaking your back! Whether you’re enjoying the nostalgia of Knoebels, the crafts of Silver Dollar City, the Southern charm of Dollywood, or the splashtastic fun of Holiday World, these parks offer ways to make the day affordable and entertainment and rides for everyone.
