Natchitoches

Located along the Cane River Lake, Natchitoches is widely regarded as a smaller and calmer New Orleans. Cajun influences still flow through the town and are especially apparent in the eclectic group of restaurants, boutiques, and cafés. And, if you’re in the area around the holidays, you’re in luck. The Natchitoches Christmas Festival is a six-week festival that transforms the downtown district into a magical world full of holiday lights, carriage rides, and historic home tours. Also, if you’re a Sally Field or Dolly Parton fan, you might be interested to know that this was where the iconic 1989 film Steel Magnolias was filmed.

White Castle

The biggest draw for White Castle is the Nottoway Plantation Resort. Both walking and boat tours of the plantation are available. And, if you want to stay overnight at the plantation, you’re in luck—parts of it are now a bed and breakfast! Many consider this Civil War relic to be the largest plantation home in the South.

Abita Springs

Located among the woods, Abita Springs is home to Abita Beer, a brewing company that launched in 1986. Tourists from as far away as Japan and Canada have visited the Abita Mystery House. It’s a potpourri of odd art, antiques, and bizarre humor that you’ll either love or hate. Every spring, on a Saturday around Easter, the entire town transforms into one huge yard sale.

New Roads

Situated along the Mississippi border in Pointe Coupee Parish, this attractive town offers numerous Creole and Southern dining options. With a population of about 4,000, it strikes the balance between a small-town feel and a bustling metropolis. Many of the beautiful historic homes in town are actually bed and breakfasts! New Roads also holds a smaller-scale Mardi Gras, drawing thousands of visitors every year.

St. Francisville

This beautiful and charming small town is located along the Mississippi River. St. Francisville is an active participant in the Main Street Revitalization Program and boasts many hundred-year-old homes, historic churches, and award-winning restaurants. On the fourth Thursday of every month, the town puts on a live music event known as “Vibes in the Ville.”

Coushatta

Often hailed as one of the best small towns in Louisiana, Coushatta is known for its quiet and peaceful flow and romantic eateries. This is a great place for a day trip or settling down to live out the golden years. Of course, if you need a little excitement, it’s also home to Louisana’s largest casino resort, which boasts fine dining, luxurious accommodations, and even live entertainment!
