Do you remember season one of The Andy Griffith Show? Andy Griffith’s toothy grin and more cornpone personality? The reference to Andy and Barney being cousins that was seemingly retconned in later seasons? The fact that Howard McNear didn’t even play Floyd the Barber in his first appearance?

What about Ellie Walker? Do you remember her?

Played by actress Elinor Donahue, then fresh off a long-running stint as Betty Anderson on Father Knows Best, Ellie Walker is a spunky pharmacist who sweeps into Andy’s life like a whirlwind and disappears just as quickly. Although she only appeared in twelve episodes, Ellie made an indelible impression on fans. To this day, there are Reddit threads that mention her and wish that she had stayed on as a permanent cast member. If you’re a casual viewer of The Andy Griffith Show, you might be wondering what even happened to Ellie Walker. Fortunately, we have the answer!

The Truth about Elinor Donahue’s Departure

If you ever thought that Ellie Walker seemed a great deal younger than Andy Griffith, you weren’t imagining things. Elinor Donahue was merely twenty-three when she landed the role of Ellie Walker, a whole eleven years younger than Andy Griffith. According to Remind Magazine, Donahue struggled to adjust from being a child actress to a leading lady. “To be honest, I felt like a bird out of a nest,” Donahue later confessed. “I didn’t feel like I had all my feathers yet, and I didn’t feel capable. It was the strangest feeling.” Author Daniel de Visé also noted Donahue’s discomfort in his book Andy & Don, writing: “Andy is paired with poor Ellie, still gamely playing out the sad charade of an on-screen romance; when Andy reaches over for Ellie’s hand, she leaps like a frightened cat. Ironically, the script calls for precisely this sort of tension between the other couple in the room.”

Though there were some rumors that Griffith fired Donahue due to their lack of chemistry…

…that simply isn’t true. Once again, Remind Magazine has the inside scoop. In Miss Donahue’s own words: “I had a three-year contract for that show, but at the end of the first year, I asked to be let out of my contract, because I didn’t feel that I was playing the role properly. I just didn’t feel right about it. In retrospect, and from things that people have said to me—very lovely things—I was doing okay. I was just not a happy camper, and there was no point in my trying to continue with it.”

While some claim that Griffith didn’t take Donahue’s departure personally, de Visé claims otherwise. In Andy & Don, he detailed a run-in that the two former costars had at a Christmas party. “I walked up to [Andy] and I tapped him lightly on the arm, and I didn’t know what to expect,” Donahue later recounted. “I said, ‘Mr. Griffith? I want to tell you how sorry I am if I upset you for having left the show.’ He said, ‘No, no, don’t give it another thought. We didn’t know how to write for you. That’s all it was.’ And he gave me a look that told me I was dismissed.” However, don’t let that story cloud your judgment of Andy Griffith! Donahue also referred to him as a “very, very kind and nice man”, so we’re confident in asserting that there was never any bad blood between the two costars, during or after filming!
