‘White Christmas’ Star Vera-Ellen Tripped During THIS Iconic Dance Scene
For many people around the world, White Christmas is mandatory holiday viewing. We think it’s not only one of the best Christmas movies of all time but one of the most iconic films in general. But even the best movies have a mistake or two—and White Christmas is no exception to that rule.
Some are easy to spot, like when Bing Crosby’s voice seemingly comes out of Danny Kaye’s mouth during the classic “Snow” number. Some, on the other hand, are a little harder to catch. Like the time that Vera-Ellen accidentally trips!
How did the mistake happen?
Most people know Vera-Ellen from her role in White Christmas. What some people might not know is that the Ohio-born actress and dancer was a Broadway star and a Rockette before she went twirling across our screens as Judy Haynes. She trained at the Hessler Studio of Dancing in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Doris Day was a fellow student. Funnily enough, the two actresses would often carpool to class together! Though an accomplished dancer with decades of training, Vera-Ellen still made a tiny mistake during “The Best Things Happen While You’re Dancing.”
At around the 3:30 mark, actor and comedian Danny Kaye drops onto one knee while Vera-Ellen twirls around him. If you watch carefully, you can see her trip over Kaye’s outstretched foot. The veteran dancer continues the choreography without missing so much as dropping her smile for a millisecond. In fact, she handles the mistake so well that we didn’t even know she made it until we did the research for this article! The more you know!
