Why Boomers Should Try Out Square Dancing

Last night, my wife Mary Ann and I were guests at the Square Dancers Club’s party in the clubhouse at The Village at Deaton Creek, a Del Webb community. Our neighbors, who are avid square dancers and members of this club, invited us.
Smiling faces and cowboy boots filled the dance floor. The people genuinely looked like they were having a good time as they moved around the room. For anyone unfamiliar with square dancing like I was before last night, a square consists of four couples. You dance with multiple partners, so it’s also a social event.
Swing your partner, dosey do…

The caller (the person who announces the dance figures) sang some of the calls. The music was enjoyable in and of itself. The calls brought smiles to the dancer’s faces. While people made mistakes, there was no judgment—only laughter.
This dance club meets every Tuesday evening. While their dedication impresses me, I can understand why so many members are loyal. After all, what’s more fun than enjoying good music, good refreshments, and the company of good friends?
Del Webb communities have a variety of dance clubs and all are open to anyone living in the community. Mary Ann and I were members for over a year and loved the lessons. It was a challenge and a fun workout, all in one. Plus, my wife and I made some nice memories.
Of course, line dancing is extremely popular also in Del Webb communities. Classes range from beginner to advanced. You’d be shocked at how well some of the expert dancers move. Most senior dances have a line dance or two thrown it. In fact, it’s also popular on cruises, and it’s no wonder. All you really need is some space and a partner.
Yes, dancing is one of the most popular activities at Del Webb and other active adult communities. After trying it out for myself, it’s not hard to see why!

Other Benefits of Square Dancing
If my spiel didn’t convince you, let me tell you about the other benefits of square dancing! Here are a few reasons why every older adult should give it a try:
- It’s easy to learn. Dancing can be complicated. All those steps with the fancy French names that ballerinas have to learn? The complicated choreography of hip-hop dancing? Forget it! However, square dancing is easy, since the caller tells you each step as you go along. The choreography is simple enough that even someone whose feet have never touched a dance floor can learn.
- It’s a great workout. According to Square Up Fashions, square dancing can burn between 200 and 400 calories in 30 minutes! Additionally, it can improve your sense of balance, reducing your risk of falls and fall-related fractures.
- It’s good for your heart. And we don’t just mean in a metaphorical sense! Two hours of square dancing is equivalent to a 5-mile walk, and doing it regularly can lower your blood pressure and improve your cholesterol.
- It can boost brain function. Our cognitive health is important, especially as we age. Fortunately, square dancing can train your brain along with your body. Not only can it lift your mood, but it can also ease anxiety. Plus, the calls can help your brain to stay alert and sharp.
- It can improve your mood. We all get down at times, but staying sad isn’t good for your mental, cognitive, or physical health. Fortunately, this activity can be the cure for the winter blues! You can socialize with other people, meet new friends, and release a whole slew of endorphins. Plus, you can feel a sense of belonging in a tight-knit community of people who just want to dance. What could be better than that?
