10 Back to School Prayers for Your Grandchildren

Students of all ages have so many reasons to be stressed about school.

So do their parents and grandparents.

Peer pressure is still alive and well. Cliques still exist. Gossip is still the lifeblood of most schools. Bullies still stalk the hallways, looking for their next victim. Worse still, about 30% of teens reported that they’d been cyberbullied at some point in their lives.

Some kids will spend this year trying to adjust to a new school, with new teachers, new classmates, and new unwritten rules for survival. Others will wonder how on Earth they’ll ever learn to solve for X. Seniors will agonize over college applications and good grades.

It’s a big, scary world out there, and unfortunately, schools don’t shield children from it. Some might even argue that schools expose children to negative influences and temptations. The statistics all but confirm that. According to the American Addiction Centers, 2 out of 3 students have tried alcohol by the 12th grade. Around 7.8% of high school students vape. And, even more disturbingly, 20% of teens start hurting themselves because of peer pressure.

Yes, there are a thousand reasons for grandparents to worry about their grandchildren as they head into a new school year.

But here’s the good news.

There’s power in prayer.

Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” If you’re anxious about this new school year, let go and give it to God. Here are just a few prayers you can pray over your grandchildren as they head back to school.

1. A Prayer for Protection

2 Thessalonians 3:3 – But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.

Father God,

I’m so thankful that my grandchildren get to enjoy another year of learning, making new friends, and having new experiences. But I also can’t deny that I worry about them. Today, I pray a hedge of protection around my grandkids. I pray that you’ll protect their minds from negative influences and help them hold fast to Your truth. I pray that you’ll also protect them from physical harm. While I never want to think about the worst happening to my grandchildren at school, I feel so anxious whenever I watch the news or come across a devastating headline. Please keep them safe this school year from anything that might harm them, be it physical, spiritual, emotional, or mental.

3. A Prayer for Teachers and Staff Members

Hebrews 13:7 – Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

Lord, I pray for my grandchildren’s teachers. I know that teachers don’t have an easy job, especially nowadays. Bless them and watch over them as they instruct my grandkids and all the other students in their class. Grant them patience, wisdom, and understanding. Help them instill my grandkids with a love of learning. Help them guide their students through every lesson plan and answer any questions that they might have. Help them be gracious to the students if they make mistakes or struggle with a certain subject. I also pray that you’ll strengthen them and help them to be a source of light and love to my grandchildren.

4. A Prayer for Parents

Proverbs 22:6 – Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.

Lord, I know that the school is tough on more than just kids. If I worry about my grandkids, I know their parents fret that much more. Not to mention, the school year is busier, with after-school events, sports, extracurriculars, sleepovers, meetings, and more responsibilities. I know that parents have to perform an impossible balancing act. But Matthew 19:26 tells us that with You, all things are possible. Father God, I pray that you’ll give my grandkids’ parents strength that they didn’t even know they had. Hold them in your Hand and walk with them through this school year and whatever they might face. Help them give their fears to You.

5. A Prayer for the Future

Jeremiah 29:11 – For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Lord, I know that for young people, it can be hard to figure out what they’re supposed to do with their lives. I pray that You’ll show my grandchild what they’re meant to do with their lives. Please open their eyes and spark a love for an interest or subject that can later blossom into a career they enjoy. Guard their mind against anxiety and self-doubt. Help them understand that every day is a stepping stone for their future and to treat it as such. I pray that you’ll deliver them from despair or hopelessness or anything else that might make them fret about their future. Help them, Lord, and walk alongside them.

6. A Prayer for Truth

John 17:17 – Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

God, I know that sometimes, public schools don’t exactly teach a Biblical worldview. Young minds are malleable sponges, which can be a double-edged sword. I pray that the lessons they’ve learned from their church leaders, parents, camp counselors, and other spiritual leaders will continue to take root in their minds. Please give them discernment, wisdom, and the courage to hold fast to Your truth, which is the only truth. Protect them from the things Satan might use to confuse or entrap them. Guard their minds against the lies of this world, which can sometimes seem so appealing, even celebrated. I pray that you’ll give my grandchildren a desire to know the Truth.

7. A Prayer for Friendship

Proverbs 18:24 – One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

Father God, I know that friendship is important, but they have to be the right kinds of friendships. There are many definitions of bad friends, and it doesn’t necessarily mean someone who’s a negative influence. It can also be someone who gossips or forms cliques, or simply isn’t there for you. I pray that you’ll send good friends into my grandchildren’s lives. Friends who will love and encourage them. Friends who won’t drag them down or make them question their self-worth. I pray that if their friends aren’t believers, You’ll use my grandchildren as witnesses. Help them to share the love of Christ with their friends and to be a positive influence.

8. A Prayer for Health

3 John 1:2 – Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Lord, I pray that you’ll keep my grandkids healthy this year, and I don’t just mean from illnesses. I pray that you’ll also bolster their mental health. Stress and anxiety can run rampant during the school year, so I pray that you’ll keep my grandchildren’s minds strong. Help them give all their anxiety and fear to you. God, if they’re struggling, I pray they won’t keep it inside. Please give them the courage and strength to share their burdens with others. Uphold them in Your Hand and keep their minds and bodies strong this coming school year.

9. A Prayer for Integrity

Proverbs 13:6 – Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

Father God, integrity is so important. Kids are often tempted to cheat on their schoolwork, but I pray that my grandchildren won’t fall into that temptation. I pray that you’ll keep them honest and help them to take their studies seriously. But integrity goes beyond ethics. It’s also about being responsible and working hard. I pray that you’ll strengthen my grandchildren’s character. Speak to them through Your Word. Help them be a light for others. Help them realize that spreading gossip does so much damage. If they make a mistake, I pray that You’ll give them the strength and humility to own up to it. I pray that you’ll give them integrity and wisdom beyond their years.

10. A Prayer for Other Students

Mark 10:14 – When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Father God, I might never know the names of the other students at my grandchildren’s school, but you know them. Your Word says that you even know the number of hairs on their heads (Luke 12:7). I pray that you’ll protect and bless the other students at my grandchildren’s school. Please keep them safe. If they don’t know you, I pray that you’ll send believers into their path to share Your truth with them. Father God, I pray that you’ll also make this school year a great one for other people’s grandkids.

In your name, Amen.
