26 Ways for Seniors to Make Every Day Count in 2026

2026 is here! Whether you’re excited about the new year or convinced that it, like most years past 2020, will be terrible, there are still countless ways you can make it count! Here are a few easy things you can do to make your 2026 better than 2025.

1. Set daily goals.

Goals are important! The best part? They don’t even have to be huge! This year, try setting small, easy-to-reach goals. Maybe you should try to make your bed every day or go for a walk every day that the weather is nice. Or you could make a goal to call your friends more!

2. Be grateful.

If we’re being honest, we have a thousand reasons to complain. But on the flip side, we all have a thousand reasons to be grateful. And the latter is what you should focus on in 2026! Gratitude is better for your health than negativity. (No, really! It can lessen anxiety and improve your sleep.) You don’t have to pray or journal or even send a card to express gratitude. Even a simple positive thought (i.e., I’m so grateful I got out of bed this morning) can do a world of good for your brain!

3. Stay active!

It’s a cliche, at this point: everyone vowing to lose weight and get buff in the new year. Rather than setting aesthetic goals, just try to stay more active! For some, that might mean taking a walk or lifting weights. For others, that might mean doing more chores around the house. Just try to stay on your feet a little more and get in at least thirty minutes of exercise a day.

4. Learn something new.

Learning is good for your brain! So this year, make it a point to learn something new every day. You don’t have to enroll in a class to learn (though it’s a great way to do so!). You could always try to learn a new language through Duolingo.

5. Connect with loved ones.

It’s funny because we live in the most connected society on Earth…yet we’re more disconnected than ever. Sure, we text, we Facebook, we Instagram. But what we don’t do? Spend time in person. This year, make it a point to do more than check in with your loved ones. Get intentional about spending time with them! Have lunch together or just hang out for a few minutes. Don’t let your phone replace face-to-face interactions!

6. Be kind!

J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, once said, “Always try to be a little kinder than necessary.” In 2026, try to make that your motto! It takes no effort to be rude and mean. Sometimes, it is hard to be kind. Which is why we should take Mr. Barrie’s advice and always be kinder than necessary! Be nice to servers and the people who take your call at the bank. Smile at strangers more. Maybe even pay for somebody’s food in the drive-through.

7. Live more in the moment.

Most of us live either two steps in the past or ten in the future. But honestly? Life is short. Why waste your time worrying about the things that you can’t change? In 2026, try to live fully in every moment. Don’t stress about your to-do list or fret about that mistake you can’t undo. Try to make better decisions in the present. Keep moving forward!

8. Make self-care a priority.

Self-care should be easy. But for many of us, it gets pushed to the side the second our calendar gets filled up. Books languish unread on our shelves. That bath bomb we got for Christmas stays in the box until we find it again three years in the future. That should change in 2026! Even if it’s just five minutes, make some time for you throughout the day.

9. Read!

Reading is good for the soul and the brain! Studies show that it’s not only a stress reliever, but it also improves cognition! Plus, we feel it goes hand in hand with our last tip. Reading is a great form of self-care!

10. Capture memories.

You know what they say! A picture is worth a thousand words. So, this year, take more pictures! While they should stay in your camera roll, you can also try to print some out and hang them on your wall. But cameras aren’t the only thing that can capture memories! You can always try journaling. You don’t have to sit down and write something every day. Some days, exciting things just don’t happen. But on those days when you make a memory or spend some time with a friend, jot it down so you won’t forget it!

11. Stay hydrated.

Staying hydrated is easy, in theory. But let’s be honest―when given the choice between coffee and a glass of water, we’ll choose the former every time. But you need to drink water for your health. So get a refillable water bottle and take small sips throughout the day.

12. Be creative!

If you think creativity is only for kids and teens, you’re dead wrong. You can be creative at any age. The problem is, as we get older, we tend to stop painting, drawing, writing, and dreaming. Let’s change that in 2026! If you’ve wanted to try your hand at painting, get a paint set and do it. Write a story for fun. Think outside the box. Wear those funky yellow pants with that polka-dot shirt you bought on a whim. Find little ways to be creative and imaginative every day!

13. Help others.

“My mother said the cure for thinking too much about yourself was helping somebody who was worse off than you,” Sylvia Plath wrote in her 1963 novel The Bell Jar. If all you think about is yourself, it’s not too late to change that. In fact, 2026 is the perfect time to start helping others! You could always volunteer at a soup kitchen or at your church. Or you could volunteer to babysit your grandkids more. You can also find charities to donate to online.

14. Do a digital detox.

Here’s the thing. We complain a lot about how things used to be, while we have a phone in our hands. If we want the world to unplug, it has to start with us. So, this year, put down your phone more. Maybe have a technology-free day where you unplug completely and live like an Ingalls. You can also do half a detox, in which you unfollow toxic pages or maybe delete apps that take up way too much of your time.

15. Plan adventures.

As Carl from Up once said, adventure is out there! The best part? You don’t have to hop on a plane or get your passport to have them! Plan small adventures. That could be something as simple as finally trying that new Mexican restaurant down the street or ordering a different drink at your favorite coffee joint. Drive to an antique store a few towns over. Call up your bestie and plan a fun day trip. Be more open to spontaneity!

16. Journal.

As we said in a previous tip, journaling is a great way to capture your memories and organize your thoughts! You don’t have to journal every single day, but if you have an unused notebook lying around, why not turn it into your personal journal in 2026? You can jot down memories, funny quotes your grandkids said, a line or two you read in your devotional. Anything you want to remember, really!

17. Celebrate your accomplishments.

You got up this morning. Congratulations! Every day in 2026, celebrate an accomplishment you had that day. It could be that you made your bed instead of leaving your blankets all rumpled. Or that you took a leap of faith and made a brand-new recipe you found in a magazine (and nailed it). Or that you read for an hour instead of watching TV. Find small victories to celebrate every single day.

18. Be positive!

It’s okay if you’re like us, and you see the glass as half-empty. You don’t have to turn into Leslie Knope to be positive. Just try to find reasons to stay positive every single day. Focus on what you do have instead of what you don’t.

19. Save your money.

Money and stress go hand in hand. Oftentimes, it’s because we don’t have enough of it. If you want to give your brain a little peace, then start saving your money. Set aside ten dollars into a little nest egg every time you get paid or get your Social Security check. Instead of buying coffee or sausage egg rolls all the time, make them at home. Also, try not to order so much on Amazon Prime. Yes, it’s fun to buy things and scratch that consumer itch, but no purchase is ever worth the stress!

20. Stay curious.

Kids are naturally curious about the world around them. Sadly, we lose that as we get older. We get settled into our routines, our thought patterns, even our perspectives. No wonder we’re so much more depressed as adults! Instead of closing your mind, try to open a little in 2026. No, we’re not suggesting that you get rid of your core beliefs. We’re just saying that you should be willing to think outside the box ever once in a while. Maybe figure out a new skill or a new way of doing something old.

21. Make new friends.

Friends are great, but a lot of us don’t have enough of them. Or we stay in friendships that really don’t bring much value to our lives, simply because we don’t know how to make new friends. It’s really not as complicated as we make it. We just need to be in places where we can meet new friends! For older adults, this might mean checking out that senior center near you or enrolling in a class. Or it could mean joining an online group for bookworms or crocheting enthusiasts or birdwatchers. Or it could mean getting more involved in your church. Whatever the case, let’s make 2026 the year we make tons of new friends!

22. Declutter!

Spring cleaning is typically when we declutter our homes, but why wait until spring? Do a little deep cleaning to ring in 2026 the right way! Get rid of clothes you never wear. Throw away those old candles you’re never, ever going to burn. Organize your spice rack. Or whatever project applies to your house. Just declutter!

23. Express love.

Nobody likes emotionally unavailable people. If you are someone who falls into that category, it’s okay. There are probably reasons why you are that way! But you don’t have to express love with words. You can also express love with actions! So in 2026, try to be more present. Bake cookies for your neighbors or send someone a sympathy card when they lose a loved one. Send your grandkids a little text to let them know you love them and are praying for them. Don’t be afraid to let everyone around you know how much you love them!

24. Pray more.

We all have bedtime routines. For some, it’s watching two episodes of The Office before they go to bed. For others, it’s having a little snack before they brush their teeth and go to bed. Some prefer to doomscroll until their eyes can’t stay open. But here’s a bedtime routine we recommend: pray. You don’t have to know fancy words or theology to pray. You just need to open your heart to God and tell him what’s on your mind. Pray for your grandkids. Pray for your spouse. And pray for your own heart, that God might soften it and mold it. Most of all, pray that 2026 will be a wonderful year. That’s our prayer for this year, too.

25. Get enough sleep.

If you aren’t getting enough sleep, you’re doing yourself a major disservice. According to Healthline, sleep deprivation affects more than your mood. It also affects your central nervous system, your immune system, respiratory system, digestive system, cardiovascular system, and your endocrine system. Basically, all the systems! So, if you want to be your best self in 2026, make sure you’re getting at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Your entire body will thank you!

26. Laugh more!

We don’t know about you, but on the days we laugh more, we feel better. Turns out, there’s a scientific explanation. Laughter is actually a proven method of stress relief (Mayo Clinic). It can even improve your immune system! So, this year, make it a point to laugh more. Turn on a funny movie or call a hilarious friend. Do whatever tickles your funny bone!
