5 Reasons to Take a Day Trip

Calling all my fellow retirees. Do you like traveling? I’m sure you do! We all do. However, if you’re an older adult living on a fixed income, you might not be able to travel as often as you’d like. Or maybe you’re not physically able to travel long distances. That’s where day trips come in! You can still see new places and experience new things without sacrificing your wallet or your health. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider taking a day trip.

1. Change of scenery.

Most of us love our homes, but there are times when we get tired of staring at the same four walls all the time. We all need a change of scenery! The next time you feel yourself getting a little stir crazy, plan a day trip! Even a few hours away from your home will do you a world of good.

2. Meet new people.

It can be hard for us Boomers to make friends. Once we retire, we start to slowly lose touch with our work friends. A lot of our school friends may live elsewhere. Basically, our social lives suffer in the crossfire! The good thing about day trips is that they allow us to cross paths with people we may otherwise have not met.

3. Relatively inexpensive.

Let’s face it—traveling is expensive. If you’re a senior who’s budgeting or pinching pennies, you probably can’t afford a week-long trip to the Caribbean. And that’s okay! Instead, plan a fun day trip. You don’t need to visit an expensive destination. Instead, pack your own lunch and visit a park. Use the internet to aid your quest. You can have fun without spending a lot of money.

4. Not too tiring or physically demanding.

Travel has a funny way of wearing out even the most seasoned adventurer. Even this Boomer can get all tuckered out a lot more quickly than I’d care to admit. The good thing about day trips is that they’re not too physically demanding. Sure, you might have to wake up early and walk around, but it’s just one day. Even this Boomer can handle that! So, even if you’re not as physically fit as you used to be, you don’t have to put your travel plans on hold. Just start planning some day trips!

5. You get to come home and sleep in your own bed.

Did you know it’s been scientifically proven that we sleep better in our own beds? If you’re somebody who struggles to fall asleep on vacation, you’re not alone! I always have a hard time adjusting to a new mattress. I’m used to my nice bed at home! One of the many advantages of a day trip? You don’t have to sleep in a strange bed. Instead, you get to have your fun during the day but still crawl into your own bed at night. Truly a happy medium!
