7 Best Mother’s Day Gifts for Grandmothers

Mother’s Day is less than two weeks away, which means it’s time to get serious about finding the perfect gift for the most important woman in your life. In order to find the best gift for Grandma before the special day arrives, it is important to consider the many different kinds of grandmothers out there.
The Foodie

“Grandmothers are the roots that anchor the family tree, providing nourishment for its growth.”
Grandmothers are typically the best cooks in the family. They have several generations worth of kitchen experience. This is definitely the case with my mother-in-law. I think cooking is one of her greatest passions and the biggest expression of her love language. In fact, she cooks for our family about three days a week. There isn’t a time that we enter her door that she doesn’t offer us something she has baked or ask if we are hungry. She particularly likes cooking for her grand, and she has their favorite desserts waiting. But that doesn’t mean that she wants to be chained to her stove. We make sure she isn’t. On Mother’s Day, we make sure we supply her with gift certificates for her favorite restaurants. She is an on-the-go Grandma, so she truly enjoys eating a nice meal while she is out and about.

The Gardener

“In the garden of life, Grandmothers are the tender caretakers, nurturing blooms of happiness.”
I drove by our local greenhouse the other day and slowed down, as I always do to see some of this spring’s offerings. I noticed more than flowers. If I had conducted a customer demographic study, my research would have concluded that most of the folks carrying baskets of blossoms or flats of flowers were seniors. If I provided more detailed research, I would have noted that most of those seniors were women. I wasn’t one bit surprised.
All of the most beautiful gardens I have noticed or toured have predominantly belonged to grandmothers. In our family, my grandfather was the produce king, and my grandmother was the poppy queen. It was one of her favorite flowers, and even though this June will be twenty years since her passing, her poppies have stood the test of time, whereas many of her other flowers haven’t. They are a sweet memorial and tribute to our family’s most passionate gardener. So, get in your car and make a beeline for the nearest nursery because Mother’s Day is when flowers sell best and sell quickly. For extra thoughtfulness, don’t forget helpful gardening products like garden carts, gardening gloves, and kneeling pads.
The Outdoorswoman

“A grandmother’s love is a guiding star, leading us through life’s twists and turns.”
My friend is a nature-loving grandmother who spends a good deal of time hiking, fishing and even kayaking. She and her husband live in a log cabin and hike the trails on their property when they aren’t hiking at a state park. Her adult children and grandchildren often join them on their open-air adventures. My friend especially loves to sit on her front porch and admire her flower garden after a day of weeding. On spring and autumn evenings, she can be found by their firepit as she studies the night sky. In fact, she taught her children and is now teaching her grandchildren the names of the various constellations. Last year, her daughter’s family gave this stargazer a sweetly unique Mother’s Day gift. They bought and named a star after her. To say that this grandma has star status in her family is more than just a turn of phrase.

The Birdwatcher

“Grandmothers are the songbirds that fill our lives with songs of love and joy.”
It is pretty safe to say that many grandmothers are birdwatchers. Around 96 million people in the U.S. closely watched, fed, or photographed birds; traveled to public parks to view birds; or created natural planting areas around their homes to encourage bird activity in 2022. The stats have dropped slightly in the past two years, but an amazing 35 percent of Americans are aviary enthusiasts. Average birders are middle-aged and seniors, ranging from 40 years old to 70 years old.
With the rising cost of living, bird feeders, bird houses, and bird food are guaranteed to be a very practical and very welcome Mother’s Day gift. Buy a variety of bird delicacies to attract different birds. Thistle seed, black oil sunflower seed, and a millet seed mix are among bird favorites. Suet is also a wonderful way to attract birds. Suet cages are available to buy with ready-made suet squares. Give your bird-watching grandmother a gift she can enjoy year-round.
The Historian

“Grandmothers are the storytellers who breathe life into our family’s history and legacy.”
When I was a little girl, I had a habit of asking my grandmother questions about different things in her large farmhouse. I asked why her house had two kitchens and a locked stairway to two small rooms above that kitchen that no one used. She explained that the second kitchen with the huge cast iron wood stove and the two rooms above the kitchen had once been used to feed and board dairy farm workers. Now that I am older, I wish I had asked her questions of a different nature. I wish I had asked more about her life as a child whose parents emigrated from England, and about my grandfather’s family and the history of her life on the farm when she married my grandfather. Today’s grandparents have the opportunity to share their stories with future generations. There are many hardbound books and even ebooks in which they can answer the kind of questions that I wish I had asked my own grandmother. It is a gift that truly keeps on giving, and it’s the perfect gift to give your grandmother on Mother’s Day.
The Quilter

“A grandmother’s love is like a warm quilt wrapping us in comfort and security.”
I see them all the time in antique stores. Beautiful works of art made from fabrics that have stood the test of time. This age-old art form is still practiced by many a grandmother. My husband and I have been the recipients of two personalized quilted gifts from the quilters in our church. Typically, quilters are fabric store fanatics. This Mother’s Day, give your creative grandmother a gift certificate to her favorite fabric store. She will truly be like a kid in a candy store. Such a gift will be sure to bring a smile to her face–and you might just be the recipient of her next pièce de résistance!
The Prayer Warrior

“In a grandmother’s prayers, we find strength and protection that spans beyond this world.”
Our children are blessed to have a grandmother who prays for them daily. They are also blessed to have grown into adulthood attending church with her each week, along with their grandfather and our family. They have watched her faith in action in hundreds of ways through the years. She has several favorite Christian authors and Bible study leaders. She also has several favorite faith-filled singers whose songs she enjoys. If your grandmother is a prayer warrior, make her Mother’s Day special with a new study Bible, a new prayer journal, or download her favorite inspirational music. A piece of jewelry that represents her faith can also let her know how much you see and appreciate the spiritual inspiration she is in your life.
