How to Find the Perfect Senior Apartment for YOU!

1. Define your needs.
Gymnasts don’t compete without learning a few routines. Basketball players never hit the court until their coach has devised a few strategies. The same logic applies to apartment hunting! If you go in unprepared, you run the risk of overwhelming yourself right off the bat. Before you even get within a hundred feet of an apartment building, grab a pen and write out what you’re looking for. Does the apartment come with senior-friendly accommodations, such as grab bars in the shower and wheelchair accessibility? Are there elevators and common areas? Are amenities important to you? And what about the location? Is it close to a hospital and your favorite downtown hotspots? And don’t forget about your budget! How much are you willing to pay in rent? If you’re on a fixed income, would you be better off looking at a low-income complex?
2. Do your research!
If you know someone who lives in an apartment complex, reach out to them and start asking some questions. Do they enjoy apartment living? Does it have amenities? How much do they pay in rent? A firsthand perspective can help narrow down your search! Some other places where you can begin your apartment-finding quest are:
You can also check out local Facebook groups or listings for futher options. Also, make sure you read online reviews! Both Yelp and Google can be super helpful resources. Always cross-reference the complexes you find against these reviews!
3. Visit the properties.
You wouldn’t buy a car without test-driving it, and the same applies to apartments! Once you’ve narrowed down your search, it’s time to pick up the phone and schedule an appointment. Make sure to visit during business hours. Take note of how the staff treats you. Staff members often set the tone for a community, so if they aren’t friendly, it might be time to look elsewhere. Don’t be afraid to ask the residents some questions! They can offer an even better firsthand perspective than Google and Yelp! (Note: If any of the reviews mention something about bed bugs, you probably should hightail it out of there, if not cross it off your list entirely. Trust us, you do NOT want to deal with bed bugs.)
4. Ask questions.
You aren’t done asking questions yet! Before you sign anything, make a list of all the questions you want to ask. You don’t want to move into an apartment building that isn’t safe, or a building where you’ll be your own handyman (or woman). Don’t hold your peace for the sake of courtesy! Ask those hard questions and gather as much info as possible. You could even use those questions to make pro-and-con lists for each of the apartment complexes. Sure, it will take some time and some mental energy, but this is your new home we’re talking about! You shouldn’t leave any stones unturned!
5. Take your time.
Last but certainly not least, slow down. You don’t have to rush to find the perfect apartment. It’s not a race! Don’t go with the first apartment complex you visit, just because you want to be done with your search. Instead, take a deep breath. Really look around at the unit you’re visiting. Beyond safety and appearance, can you see yourself calling it home? Will you feel comfortable there? Can it accomodate all your furniture and trinkets? It doesn’t matter if your search takes a day, a week, a month, or even longer. What matters is that you feel safe, comfy, and happy! So, take a deep breath and don’t stress about your new apartment. Enjoy every moment of your search. You can worry about moving day when it comes.
