Revisit This Outstanding 1980 Medley with Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter
What do you get when you take two of the most beautiful voices ever and blend them in a medley?
The 1980 TV special Music, Music, Music!
It’s hard to hold an audience captive with just a stage and a microphone, but Ella Fitzgerald and Karen Carpenter did just that! The two songstresses sing a medley of songs that includes “This Masquerade”, “My Funny Valentine”, “I’ll Be Seeing You”, “As Time Goes By”, and “Someone To Watch Over Me.” While Karen’s vocals were pre-recorded, Ella sang live. Karen is clearly in awe of Ella, and we can’t blame her! Nicknamed “The First Lady of Song”, Ella had one of the best voices jazz. Even today, she inspires other artists, with Lady Gaga, Adele, and Lana Del Rey citing her as a major influence on their music.
Music, Music, Music was the Carpenters’ last TV special before Karen died in 1983. And though Ella also passed away in 1996, both singers live on through this special and their music.
If you can’t get enough of Karen Carpenter and Ella Fitzgerald, you’re in luck! Click the video below to enjoy nearly an hour and a half of outtakes from Music, Music, Music.
