Caring for others can be so rewarding; but for many, caregiver burnout is an all-too-common side effect. Many caregivers find themselves stretched too thin. Sometimes, the emotional and physical weight of such a demanding job becomes too much. Whether you care for a spouse, friend, or loved one, sometimes you just need a little rest! And, respite can help! Here’s how:
Not all caregivers have the advantage of staying home with whomever they care for. Some still have day jobs. But, this can create anxiety and extra worry. You might think, “what if they get hurt when I’m not there?” Hiring an in-home caregiver can put your mind at ease when you’re unable to be around as much as you’d like. Many home care services can assist with activities of daily living (ADL), meal prep, and companionship!

Many home care or community senior services offer transportation – and plenty of them are free! Bussing services often provide transport to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and even social activities. This can be especially helpful for caregivers who already have a lot on their plate. Worried about how you’re going to fit in mom’s salon trip with all you have going on this week? Then check your local government website for senior services and transportation! Not sure where to start? Try your local area agency on aging.
Adult day care is for older adults and those with disabilities. It provides professional care, socialization, and enrichment opportunities in a community-based group setting. Nurses and other specially-trained staff members assist with ADLs while participants benefit from social and physical activities. As a caregiver, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that your loved one is receiving mental and physical stimulation that you may not be able to provide yourself.
Did you know that many assisted living facilities and nursing homes provide respite? It’s true! If you’re going on vacation and it just isn’t feasible to take your senior family member, you can enlist the help of one of these centers. Residential care facilities will provide health monitoring, medication management, supervision, and more – leaving you to enjoy your time away worry-free.
For those who are taking care of a parent, the shifting of roles from child to care provider can be a lot to handle. Maybe the fear of missing out on precious time is bothersome. Respite can allow you to take a break from your role as a caregiver and work on personal relationships and quality time.
Caring for yourself is just as important as caring for a loved one. And, respite can help to alleviate any caregiver burnout you may be experiencing!
