The Active Older Adults (AOA) program at the YMCA of Greater Seattle is dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of older adults in the community. Through a variety of programs and activities, the YMCA aims to foster relationships, promote overall health, and provide a sense of belonging for AOA members.
The AOA program offers a range of fitness classes designed specifically for individuals aged 55 and older. These group fitness classes include options such as chair yoga, dance, strength training, and water fitness. These classes focus on mobility, flexibility, and safety, helping participants maintain and improve their physical well-being.
In addition to fitness classes, the AOA program also provides opportunities for social engagement and personal growth. AOA Community Cafés bring together individuals aged 55+ to build health in spirit, mind, and body through discussions facilitated by resource persons. These cafés provide a space for support, encouragement, and exploration of various topics.
For those interested in exploring their creative side, the YMCA offers a Poetry Workshop. This workshop provides an opportunity to learn about poetry styles, practice writing with guided prompts, and share poems with others. It is a chance to engage in the creative process and discover the joy of creative writing.
The AOA program also includes gatherings such as museum tours, park walks, and excursions, allowing members to connect with others while exploring local attractions and staying active in the community. Additionally, personalized wellness plans are available for AOA members to create individualized strategies for maximizing their YMCA membership and achieving personal health goals, with the guidance of a health coach.
