Boomers, Find Your Passion at Your Pace!
This morning, I looked at my calendar, only to find that nothing was scheduled. Relief poured over me. While my active adult community offers so many fun activities, I often try to do too many of them at once.
When you first move into a 55-plus community, it’s common to sign up for everything. Your calendar starts to fill up, and soon you have something to go to almost every day. As you can imagine, this can become overwhelming very quickly!
In fact, I’ve already dropped out of the writers’ group, because it was just taking too much time. I learned so much in the meetings and enjoyed the assignments. The people were interesting, but it was taking up far too much of my schedule.
That’s when I decided enough was enough.
The regular activities I’ve embraced are walking, bocce ball, and weekly cardio classes. Of course, writing is also a passion—just one I pursue at my leisure. In addition, my wife and I attend a couple of concerts a month at the clubhouse. Our neighbors had us over for dinner last Saturday. While I enjoy a wide range of activities and hobbies, I much prefer a less cluttered schedule in retirement.
So, as you can imagine, it was nice to see nothing on my calendar today.
Having a passion is great, and pursuing it is wonderful. There’s also nothing wrong with taking it slow. Don’t get caught in the trap of taking on too much at once. Try different things at your own pace. Who knows? You may just find your niche.
Now, that is what retirement living is all about.
