Communicating with Family Members in Caregiving

Expecting them to seamlessly transition into a caregiver role may be unrealistic and unfair.

Emphasizing the importance of embracing diversity within the care team, Lori shares a personal realization. Previously, she had wanted everyone to approach caregiving tasks the same way she did, which inadvertently pushed people away. However, she discovered that true caregiving is not about conforming to a specific set of actions, but rather about nurturing and maintaining meaningful relationships with the loved one requiring care. This understanding allowed her to appreciate the unique contributions that different family members could make, even if they deviated from her own methods.

Lori encourages caregivers to let go of rigid expectations and be open to alternative approaches. Whether it’s allowing a family member to order takeout instead of cooking dinner or accepting their preferred way of connecting with the loved one, she stresses the importance of respecting each individual’s relationship with the care recipient. Ultimately, it is vital not to let the pressures of caregiving strain familial relationships, unless abuse or neglect are involved, in which case intervention becomes necessary.
