Did you know that over one-third of older adults have hearing loss? Known in medical circles as presbycusis, age-related hearing loss certainly affects one’s quality of life. This condition tends to happen gradually, so older adults may not even realize they’ve suffered hearing loss until it severely impacts their quality of life. Many factors may contribute to hearing loss. These include:
- Aging
- Health conditions, like diabetes and heart disease (according to John Hopkins)
- Long-term exposure to loud noises
- Certain medications (according to the NIDCD)
- Physical abnormalities in the ear

- Trouble understanding certain words or consonants
- Struggling to follow conversations
- Ringing in the ears (according to the CDC)
